Meet Lulene Cooper, who has just become a business owner with Travel Counsellors

Lulene has completed her 5-day induction training at the Cape Town head office. We caught up with her to learn more about herself and her journey to becoming a Travel Counsellor.

What is your background and where did you work before becoming a Travel Counsellor? I started working in travel at a young 19 years old for Flight Centre. I was team leader and worked at many stores. I then made a change and entered the corporate arena for Corporate Traveller. Here I was responsible for looking after a portfolio of businesses exceeding R1.5M turnover per month. I thrived in the past paced business environment and loved being in control of my own business portfolio. After I had had my 2nd boy, I started looking after leisure travel within the corporate arena and we also moved to Somerset West. This was when my career had to come to a halt. I had a wonderful opportunity where I got to spend 2 years at home with my boys.

Tell us a little bit about yourself I have a fit and gorgeous husband and I am a mommy to two beautiful little busy boys. Life is an absolute adventure! I am outnumbered by the men in my family and I am often taken aback by the humor that they display. I love and appreciate every single moment with my precious family. We often spend many days at the beach, we go cycling on any adventurous looking track and I love exploring newfound activities and places with the boys. They have so much to learn and explore so it is a treat taking them anywhere new. We do not have a pet yet, but considering having a third (in the form of a dog) in the next 2 years. Our mission is to keep up with our kids, so we stay active, we take part in park runs, adventure races and love to play sports. On my bucket list is a weeklong canoe adventure on the Orange River (adults only) :)

What does becoming a Travel Counsellor mean for you? Travel Counsellors is an opportunity for me to use my time that I have available as efficient as possible to service my clients. It is my desire to grow my business, to inspire others and to be self-sufficient. At the same time, I want to be the best mom and wife that I can be.

What motivated you to start your own travel business? Knowing that I am self-motivated, that I can work well on my own and that I have the experience and of course the support needed within the business and at home. This as well as having goals helps me to stay focused and belief in myself. I am not only doing this for me, but also for my family, as I want to contribute not only financially, but also be a role model and an inspiration to my kids

What are you looking forward to most about being a Travel Counsellor? Becoming a part of the TC family, to growing my business and earning an income that will match the hard work that will deliver.

Have you set yourself any goals or milestones for what you want to achieve in your first year? I want to save up a nice big deposit to buy us a bigger family car (Fortuner). Earning a steady income (from business travel) to be able to move to a bigger house and for us to get a dog.

Have you started planning how you will grow your business/find new customers, and if so how? I will start by connecting with friends & family. I will visit businesses in the area to find some corporate clients. I plan to be active on Facebook, I will use all my connections to hand our business cards and to ask for referrals.

What do you love most about working in the travel industry? I love understanding what is important to my customers and then being able to offer them a trip personalized to them. What I find is most rewarding is when I get to speak to my customers when they are back from their trip. I love hearing their stories and seeing all their photos and videos.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I would love to travel to Bali. Travel for me is about experiencing a different culture and a different way of life. I love exploring a different world with all my senses and that is Bali to me. The people, the rice paddies, the waterfalls, cycling through villages, surfing the waters and exploring temples... It is definitely number 1 on my bucket list.

From Leisure to corporate Luluene is now running her own travel business. She is a Travel Counsellor franchisee and choose them as they minimised the risk and offered a full support structure. If you too would like to follow in Lulene's footsteps then we would love to chat to you.
