Meet Gene Wagner: A Passion for Travel and New Beginnings

Gene Wagner’s story is about following her heart and embracing change. With years of experience in the travel industry and a love for helping others explore the world, she’s now taking an exciting step forward as a Travel Counsellor.

How It All Began

Gene’s journey into travel started at the University of Johannesburg, where she studied travel and tourism. A small internship became her first role managing corporate accounts. When COVID-19 disrupted life as we knew it, Gene relocated to Durban, where she joined a large travel group as a leisure consultant. Those experiences gave her the confidence to explore starting her own business - something she’s been dreaming about for a while.

Life Outside of Work

Turning 30 this year, Gene’s life combines family, furry friends, and fun hobbies. She has two brothers — one older, now based in Cape Town, and one younger still in school. Her Yorkie, Lola, keeps her company, and when she’s not working, you’ll find her reading, listening to music, or enjoying the energy of EDM festivals like Ultra. Gene’s had the chance to visit London, Paris, Hungary, and Mauritius, but her travel bucket list is far from complete. Switzerland, Greece, and Italy are calling her name!

Why Travel Counsellors?

For Gene, becoming a Travel Counsellor means finding the balance she’s been craving. She’s excited to leave behind long commutes, work flexible hours, and focus on her clients in a way that feels personal and meaningful. “I’ll be able to tailor my services to what my clients truly need and spend more time with my family,” she explains.

Building Her Dream Business

Gene is hitting the ground running, with big plans to grow her business. Social media is her go-to for spreading the word - she’s already getting ready to connect with clients on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. She’s also counting on her friends and family to help spread the word and make referrals.

Why She Loves Travel

What drives Gene is simple - her love for connecting with people and making their travel dreams come true. “It’s amazing to hear the stories clients share when they come back from a trip I planned,” she says. She thrives on crafting experiences, whether it’s a perfect family getaway or a romantic honeymoon.

What’s Next?

Gene has clear goals for her first year: build her client base, secure corporate clients, and cover her business expenses. But most of all, she’s looking forward to doing what she loves while enjoying the freedom of working on her terms.
