From business consulting to travel planning: Amelia’s career takes off in a new direction
Here at Travel Counsellors, we make being your own boss a reality for passionate, entrepreneurial people who want to trade their 9-5 for running their own business.
Amelia Snare recently graduated from our Travel Academy after almost two decades working in the field of corporate law. A brief stint in travel at the start of her career ignited a passion for seeing the world, and she decided it was time to take the plunge and take her career in an exciting new direction. We caught up with her to find out how she found the induction, and why she’d recommend Travel Counsellors to anyone who wants to work on their own terms.
What’s your career background?
I worked for a tailor-made travel organisation many years ago, but I’ve spent the last 17 years working internationally for corporate law firms. I offered expertise in the areas of business development, marketing and people and engagement, so it was quite a mixed bag and very different to my early career in travel!
What attracted you to Travel Counsellors?
I wanted to get back to doing something I loved and had a genuine passion for. I have an old friend and ex-colleague who’s a Travel Counsellor, so I spoke to her and discussed what the reality is like and the opportunities it can bring. I then decided that the freedom and flexibility that Travel Counsellors offers would be a perfect fit for me.
What sets Travel Counsellors apart from other franchises?
I think what sets Travel Counsellors apart is the training and support you get, which starts with your first interaction with the business. Because you’re a franchisee, you’re not an employee, but you get all the support you’d expect as one. The resources and tools available to all Travel Counsellors is industry-leading. So far, it’s been absolutely brilliant.
As someone who came in on the Travel Academy route, how did you find the induction?
It was an intense two weeks, but we had some great, very patient trainers (special shout out to Kerry and Dawn!). We now have all the basics in place to start our careers as Travel Counsellors. It was also good to have the induction with a group of people from all walks of life. We’re all in a WhatsApp group and are constantly sharing ideas and feedback with each other.
What are you looking forward to most about being a Travel Counsellor?
I can’t wait to get stuck in and start booking some complex itineraries. I’m also really looking forward to working in a way that suits me and my customers’ needs.
What advice would you give to anyone who’s thinking of changing careers and becoming a Travel Counsellor?
Do it! Whatever your experience, you’ll get something from it. You can’t beat the freedom and flexibility of working for yourself, while having the comfort of the Travel Counsellors community and head office to support you.
