Hi Karen! Tell us a little bit about what you were doing before you joined Travel Counsellors

I had worked in the travel industry for nearly 25 years, but immediately prior to joining Travel Counsellors I’d taken a bit of time out and I was working for another company as an area manager. I realised I really missed travel and wanted to get back into the industry – and that’s what led me to Travel Counsellors.

How did you find out about Travel Counsellors?

Having worked in the industry for a long time, I knew about Travel Counsellors, and I was researching opportunities that would allow me to work for myself and grow my own business. I looked at different companies, but I kept coming back to Travel Counsellors.

What was it specifically that made you come back to Travel Counsellors?

It was the support network that seemed to be there. Everyone that I’d spoke to, and everything I’d read, seemed to mention people supporting each other and the support you get from head office. I didn’t quite believe it until I joined but I soon found out that it really is like that! It feels like a team even though it’s your own business.

Was there anything you were worried about?

I was worried about being on my own. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great having your own business but I was a bit concerned about the isolation. I soon overcame that by meeting other Travel Counsellors, going to supplier events, coming to head office, and making sure I really got involved with the Travel Counsellors community. All of that has worked really well.

Tell us about the technology at Travel Counsellors, and how it helps you and your business

Phenix, Travel Counsellors’ booking system, allows me to put together itineraries that are completely bespoke to the needs that each client has. I love getting to know my customers and putting together something that I know is going to be perfect for them.

Phenix is so different to other systems I’ve used previously. It offers greater flexibility, more adaptability, and it’s got lots of suppliers – including airlines, accommodation and attractions. It makes it really easy to tailor-make holidays to the customers’ requirements.

How have you been supported to grow your business?

The Relationship Management team have really supported me with my business growth. I have regular calls with them, which I plan in, so that I’m accountable in terms of taking the steps I need to take to build my business.

Having a mentor has also been invaluable to me. My mentor has been with me from the start – and is still there. They continue to check in with me, and they’ve really become a friend.

What’s the best thing about being a Travel Counsellor?

The best thing about being a Travel Counsellor is working with the people I work with. I work with great people at head office who really support me, and lots of other Travel Counsellors who’ve really helped me throughout my journey so far. Plus, you get that flexibility to get the perfect work-life balance.

It’s been great chatting to you, Karen! Finally, how has becoming a Travel Counsellor changed your life?

It’s just been such a transformation. I love having my own business – it's great! I can manage my time better. It allows me to be with my family when I want to be with them. It allows me to work later at night if I want to do something in the morning. I can adapt my working hours around what I’m doing. It really has been amazing.
