Has your mid-year review given you the wake-up call you need?

If you’re working in a corporate role, the chances are that you’ll have recently had your mid-year review. You’ll have discussed your progress against your goals, explored how you can develop, and listened to feedback about how you can improve.

For some people, mid-year reviews can give them the reassurance they need that they’re in the right role and on the path to success. But for others, the experience can be quite the opposite.
From being tasked with delivering unrealistic KPIs and feeling undervalued, to lack of progression opportunities and toxic workplace environments, there are many reasons why a formal check-in can highlight some of the key signs that it’s time to change direction.

Things to reflect on following your mid-year review

In the weeks following your review, take some time to really pause and reflect on the following:

  • Are you feeling truly fulfilled?
  • Can you genuinely say that you love your job?
  • Do you regularly feel anxious about going to work – including recurring cases of the ‘Sunday scaries’?
  • Do you have the support and resources to progress, or have you hit a glass ceiling?
  • Do you feel like you’re delivering meaningful work and having a positive impact?

Assessing where you want to go

Now that you’ve identified the signs that moving on is the right step, it’s time to think about what you want your career – and your life – to look like going forwards. Ask yourself:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • What type of working environment suits me?
  • What motivates me?
  • What are my strengths?
  • What will meet my needs – professionally, personally, emotionally, and financially?
  • What are my non-negotiables?
  • What’s my ‘why’?
