Meet Jo
Hear Jo speak about how becoming a Travel Counsellor has changed her life...
Peaks in the travel industry can be overwhelming – especially if you’re up against demanding targets and red tape. But what if you could prioritise your wellbeing without compromising the personal service you want to provide to every customer?
Last year, Jo Williams joined us from a role in retail travel, and it’s changed her life in ways she never imagined. We caught up with her to learn about her experience as a Travel Counsellor so far, and find out how she’s been able to look after her customers while feeling balanced and supported during Peaks…
What were you doing before you joined Travel Counsellors?
I was in fashion for a long time when I was younger, before travelling the world twice and then working on the high street as a travel agent for 10 years.
Why did you want to leave the retail travel environment?
The restrictions in retail stopped me from being able to express myself and give that human-to-human, personalised service. I also wanted to start my own business to do something for myself, my family, and my future.
What stood out to you about Travel Counsellors?
I visited the Support Hub and met the team on a Discovery Day, and was welcomed like I was part of the family. The atmosphere and vibe was so lovely. It oozed care - which is what I’m all about!
How does Phenix compare to systems you’ve used previously?
Compared to other systems I’ve used in retail, Phenix is a one-stop-shop. It’s got everything there for me, whereas previously I’d need to go here, there, and everywhere. But now it’s all under one roof, and it’s amazing how everything comes to life so easily at the end.
What are your highlights so far?
One highlight was going on my first big TC FAM trip with Celebrity Cruises. We were so lucky to go to the Bahamas - it was amazing! I also recently had my best month ever and received a certificate from Jim, our Global Sales Director. It’s so lovely and personal when we get recognition like that.
How has your life changed since becoming a Travel Counsellor?
Immensely! I’ve never, ever been happier - in myself, with the company, and personally. I just feel so blessed to be part of this community.
You need a lot of drive and a lot of commitment to be a Travel Counsellor, but if you’re prepared to put your heart and soul into it, you’ll reap the rewards.
How has Peaks been different as a Travel Counsellor compared to your previous role?
It’s completely different – I’m able to give my own ‘Jo’ style to my clients and make booking a holiday feel like a special experience rather than a transaction. Yes, we are busy during Peaks, but I never want to compromise my service as the booking experience is just as important as the holiday itself. Being my own boss and having the tech and support from Travel Counsellors allows me to keep it personal, and my clients become my friends!
How have you been supported during Peaks?
Peaks can be a really demanding and busy time for us in travel, and more often than not the days and weeks fly by without us taking proper care of ourselves. That’s why it’s so refreshing to be part of a community that has our wellbeing at the top of their priorities too.
As well as the operational support available for anything booking-related, the Relationship Management team and Marketing team are all there to help me grow my business. There is also a huge amount of wellbeing support, including Weekly Vlogs, TCTV broadcasts, motivational messages, WhatsApp groups, and virtual coffee mornings. We even have our own mental health support service.
I didn’t realise just how much support I would get, and if I’d have known that I wouldn’t have been so scared to make the leap!
