“It’s life-changing!” At just 31 years old, Heather is building her future on her terms

Heather joined Travel Counsellors on our Travel Trade programme back in January 2023, after working on board various cruise ships as a cruise sales specialist. Despite being in an industry she was passionate about, Heather craved the freedom to do what she loved on her own terms.

Hello, Heather! Why did you decide to trade in life on the ocean to become a Travel Counsellor?

I wanted to be in control of my own work-life balance while doing something that I loved, and Travel Counsellors allows me to do that. I can take the dog out for a walk in the middle of the day and go to the gym when I want to. I can also work when I want, wherever I want.

What are the best things about running your own travel business?

Aside from the freedom and flexibility, on a more professional level, the best thing is being part of my customers’ journeys from start to finish. I love being able to get excited with them during the planning stage. I also look forward to hearing about all the amazing things they experienced on their holiday when they return. Knowing that I’ve made it happen gives me a massive amount of job satisfaction.

What advice would you give to young people who are thinking about a career in travel?

It’s an amazing industry to work in, so absolutely go for it. Once you enter the travel industry, you don’t want to do anything else!

Why would you recommend Travel Counsellors as a career path for young people?
It enables you to live the life you want and prioritise what’s important to you. You don’t have to spend hours each day commuting to an office, you can create your own work schedule, and you have complete control over when you want to take time off yourself.

Another fantastic bonus is that the earnings are completely uncapped, so you really do get out of your business what you put in. It’s well worth putting in the effort to reap the rewards.

What makes the travel industry such an exciting industry to work in?

The travel industry is forever changing and evolving, so there’s always something new to learn. Plus, you get to explore and experience so many amazing places all over the world.

What personal qualities do you think it takes to be a Travel Counsellor?

I think you need to be self-motivated, open-minded and, most importantly, you have to really care about your customers.

How would you sum up Travel Counsellors in one word?

I’d say it’s life-changing! It’s allowed me to start building a future on my terms and create a lifestyle that I’ve always wanted.
