Building her business her way: how Sally achieved Gold with Travel Counsellors
Starting your own travel business can feel daunting — especially without a client base. But for Sally, joining Travel Counsellors in 2018 was the first step toward building a thriving travel career on her own terms. With the support, training, and award-winning technology that Travel Counsellors provide, she transformed her passion for travel into a profitable business that gives her freedom, flexibility, and fulfilment.
Today, as a Gold Travel Counsellor, Sally shares how she built her travel business from scratch, the mindset that helped her succeed, and why joining Travel Counsellors was one of the best decisions she’s ever made.
Building her business on her terms
“I came to Travel Counsellors in 2018, having worked in travel since leaving school – but with no client base. I built my business doing everything you’re advised to do as a Travel Counsellor – networking (which certainly wasn't in my comfort zone when I first joined!), maintaining a visible presence on social media, and promoting myself based on the quality of my services – and the travel experiences my customers will have when they book with me. Over time, referrals and repeat business have grown hugely. Ultimately, looking after my clients has been key for me.”
In addition to going beyond for her clients, Sally says that knowing her worth has also been a key ingredient to success. “It’s important to value your expertise and time, and make time to work on the business”, she said. Most importantly, have a network of Travel Counsellors that understand the challenges, and are a positive support to you. Plus, look after yourself!”
Achieving Gold
So, how did it feel to hit that all-important Gold milestone? “Now that it’s sunk in, achieving Gold feels amazing!”, Sally smiles. “Those who know me well knew I wanted to achieve it one day by building up my business organically with the right kind of clients. The TC Teams set-up has also meant that I’ve been able to reach my goals, whilst still being in full control of my workload and family life. It’s fantastic. I’ll definitely enjoy being Gold while it lasts.”
Support that goes the extra mile
One thing that many Travel Counsellors comment on is just how supportive and close-knit our community is. And Sally is no different.
“I’ve made some lifelong friendships since joining Trave Counsellors, and these people are there for the highs and lows – both business and personal. This is so important to have, and I’m lucky enough to have built some amazing relationships with many of the head office team too, whether that’s through charity treks, engaging in Ambassador roles, product experience trips, or appearing on TCTV.
“I also have a coaching call every few months, which I’ve done for years. When I did hit Gold, it hit home just how genuinely excited my Relationship Manager, Michelle (and the rest of the team) was for me. The coaching calls have been a big part in keeping me focused and the support means so much.”
A life-changing decision
Thinking about how her life has changed since becoming a Travel Counsellor, Sally said: “What I love most is the freedom it gives me to build a life and business that truly works for me and my family. There’s an incredible amount of support behind the scenes at Travel Counsellors that enables us to run our businesses with confidence. It’s something I couldn’t do without. It’s that support that allows me to focus on what I love most.
“Being my own boss, with no limits on annual leave and no cap on what I can earn, means I get to enjoy the flexibility and rewards of doing what I love on my terms. I feel very lucky and I’ve never regretted joining Travel Counsellors.”
Sally’s advice for anyone inspired to become a Travel Counsellor
We’ve always been very selective in our recruitment process, and that’s because it’s important for us to find the right people for our community – and Sally agrees that it takes a special kind of person to become a successful Travel Counsellor.
“A successful Travel Counsellor is someone who listens, who builds trust through great advice and thoughtful service, and who understands that this is a long game. If you’re passionate about travel, love helping people, and are prepared to put the work in while staying true to yourself, then you absolutely can make it work.
“It takes resilience, especially in those early days when you're building from scratch, and a real drive to keep showing up even when it’s tough.”
Sally’s final words of wisdom for anyone considering becoming a Travel Counsellor? “Always remember why you took this step and what you want to get from it. It takes time, hard work, and patience – but you will never look back and regret it.”
