The confidence gap: starting something new when you don't feel ready
Have you ever thought about making a change, only to hear a voice in your head say: “I’m not ready yet.”
Maybe you’re considering a new career in travel. Perhaps you want more flexibility, greater independence or the chance to build something of your own. But instead of feeling excited, you find yourself questioning whether you have enough experience, confidence or knowledge to get started.
This feeling is incredibly common. It’s often called the confidence gap: the difference between what you’re capable of doing and what you believe you’re capable of doing.
The good news? You don’t have to feel completely ready before you begin.
What is the confidence gap?
The confidence gap is the space between ability and self-belief. It can affect anyone, at any stage of their career.
- You might have the skills to succeed, but still worry that:
- You don’t know enough about the travel industry
- You haven’t worked in travel before
- You’re not confident talking to customers
- You don’t have the right business experience
- Other people are more qualified than you
These concerns can make a new opportunity feel out of reach. But confidence rarely arrives before action. More often, it grows because of action.
You don't need to know everything on day one
Starting something new doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means being willing to learn, ask questions and take the next step.
A career in travel can suit people from a wide range of backgrounds. You may already have valuable transferable skills, such as communication, organisation, customer service, sales, problem-solving or simply a passion for helping people create memorable experiences. You don’t need to be an expert in every destination or travel product before you begin. Knowledge can be developed over time. What matters is your willingness to learn and your commitment to delivering a personal experience for your customers.
Confidence comes from doing
It’s easy to believe that confident people act first because they feel ready. In reality, many people act while they’re still nervous.
Confidence is built through small experiences:
- Having your first conversation with a potential customer
- Learning something new about a destination
- Asking for advice
- Completing a training session
- Making your first booking
- Looking back and realising you handled a challenge
Each step gives you evidence that you can do more than you thought.
You don’t need a huge burst of confidence to begin a new career. You may only need enough confidence to explore the opportunity.
Replace "Am I ready?" with better questions
“Am I ready?” can feel like a question with only two possible answers: yes or no.
Try asking yourself:
- What would I like to learn?
- What support would help me get started?
- Which skills do I already have?
- What’s one small step I could take this week?
- What could my life look like if I gave this a chance?
- Would I regret never finding out what I could achieve?
These questions shift your focus from proving you are ready to discovering what is possible.
