To mark World Entrepreneur’s Day, some of our franchise owners share their favourite things about running their own travel businesses.

Leanne Rudd

The best thing about being a travel entrepreneur is the freedom to run my business how I want. I have the flexibility to work from anywhere and at any time.

I also relish the fact that we can form teams with other Travel Counsellors. This has a two-fold advantage; the first being that I can go on holiday and relax knowing that my business is being looked after by a colleague. The second advantage is that I can help other Travel Counsellors with their bookings, which gives me the opportunity to increase my income.

Becoming a travel business owner has really transformed my life - it's given me the freedom and flexibility that I've always wanted. I particularly love having my time back - I can choose to work the times of day that suit me, and I really like that I don't have to ask for time off.

For example, when my sister had her baby I was able to take my dad to the hospital to visit and support her after the birth. I was able to run my business around it so that I didn't miss that really special family time because of my work, which is priceless to me.

I wanted to be a travel entrepreneur simply to be in control of my own success. I wanted to combine my expertise in destinations with my hospitality background and ability to build strong client relationships, offering a more personal, tailored service. Plus, being able to work on my own terms was a huge motivator. I’m a big believer in setting your own work-life balance in order to find your most productive self!

The best thing about being a travel entrepreneur is the flexibility and freedom it’s given me over the past 11 years. I love to travel and can work from anywhere. It’s also allowed me to be there for my son on a daily basis. I’ve not missed out on a single thing.

The Relationship Management team have been a credit to me building my business. They are always there at the end of the phone when I need them. I also try to take part in as many training opportunities they offer as I can. Their training events have played a major part in me achieving Gold.

My favourite thing about running my own business is I get to set how I work, where I work, and when I work. I spent over 16 years in banking and really loved what I was doing, but I could never find the right work-life balance - which became so much more important once I had my two boys.

Now I get to drop them off to school and take them to all their activities, but still challenge myself every day building my own business. The extra bonus is that I get to work in travel!
