Why Mentoring Matters: Meet John, Rachel, and their mentor Alison

Starting out as a new Travel Counsellor can be an exciting but daunting leap. But for many, the biggest hurdle isn't financial or time restraints - it’s self-doubt.

John, one of our newest Travel Counsellors, shared that his biggest worry was imposter syndrome: “Would I be good enough? Will people want to book with me? Will I generate enough enquiries?”

For Rachel, it was the challenge of returning to work after a five-year break, juggling young children and wondering whether her business would be financially viable.

These doubts are completely normal when starting something new, but you don’t have to face them alone. That’s where mentoring comes in.

A safety net with real-world experience

“My mentor Alison has been a massive part of the journey,” John said. “She’s my safety net, giving me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone. She answers all my questions, gives me the confidence that I’m doing the right things to grow my business, and lifts my spirits when I’ve had one of those days,” he added.

For Rachel, Alison quickly identified where she needed more support and stepped in at just the right moments. “She was there when I made my first mistake and my confidence was knocked. She’s been available whenever I’ve needed her.”

Both John and Rachel agree: Alison’s real-world Travel Counsellors experience, patience, and encouragement have given them clarity, reassurance, and momentum in those crucial early months.

Fast-tracking growth and building client confidence

The mentoring programme doesn’t just benefit the mentee - it also has a positive effect on the client experience. John explained: “It gives confidence to potential clients. I tell them I have a mentor who helps check my itineraries and bookings, and that reassurance helps them feel comfortable working with me. It also sets us apart from other home-based travel businesses where the training is far less comprehensive.”

From Alison’s perspective

For Alison, the relationship has been just as rewarding. “I’m lucky to have some really great mentees, and I’ve loved arranging training sessions and seeing them grow,” she said.

She added that mentoring is a two-way street: “It helps me learn too - there’s always something new to discover.”

Mentoring (5)

Alison is always open about what to expect in those early months: “I’m super honest about the first six months. There will be amazing highs, but also the ‘what am I doing?’ moments. I make sure all my mentees know that those days will happen - but they also pass.”

And her passion for the community shines through: “I’m Travel Counsellors’ biggest fan. I love sharing all the amazing things we do and offer.”

Mentoring is more than just a support system - it’s a fast-track to success, helping new Travel Counsellors like John grow in confidence, skill, and ambition. Whether you're brand new to travel or simply looking for a new direction, having a mentor in your corner makes all the difference.
